About Oriental Art

Although Oriental art supplies are the traditional materials for the Oriental art creations, such as Chinese/Sumi painting and calligraphy, seal carving, fish printing, wood-block printing, wet mounting, shoji screen making, etc., they are also, in fact, the great tools and materials for the Western (regular) art creations.

For examples, Chinese brushes have been widely used by the regular watercolor, acrylic, fabric, and pottery painters. Chinese painting colors are water-based and made from natural pigments and thus they are excellent watercolor media. Chinese ink has been found to be ideal for watercolor painting and English calligraphy. Rice paper is very suitable for watercolor and wood-block creations, etc...

Therefore, we highly recommand our Oriental art supplies to the modern artists of the Western world who enjoy experimenting with a variety of media and tools.

About Chinese Brushes
Chinese brushes are generally hand-made of goat hair (soft and hold plenty of paint), wolf hair (stiffer than goat hair, like sable hair), mountain horse hair (even stiffer), and their combinations. They are excellent for watercolor, acrylic, pottery and Chinese paintings (mountain horse hair is also good for oil painting) due to their high qualities and and low prices. A new brush is always hardened with glue for protection, so before its initial use, it should be immersed in cold water for 10 to 20 minutes, or until softened. After each use, always wash it with cold water thoroughly without soap, then make the hair nice and pointed before storing. The best way for storage is to hang it with the hair pointing down. Brushes of good quality always have string loops at the top for hanging. A new brush usually has a cap for protection. It should not be recapped after its initial use; otherwise the hair will be damaged.
